History of Sumatriptan
Originally discovered in the late 1970's by a pharmaceutical company at Glixa. Sumatriptan was originally created to cure and treat migraines. Dr. Patrick Humphrey, a lead researcher, knew that vasodilators (alcohol) worsened migraines, and vasoconstrictors (ergotamine) improves
migraines. By using the artery in a dog's ear, Dr. Humphrey was able to isolate the compound GR43175, or Sumatriptan. Being a vasoconstrictor, the compound affected cartoid arteries in the head, which decreased side effects, and improved migraine symptoms.
Sumatripan was first clinically sold in 1991, and was manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA approved Sumatriptan tablets and injections June 1, 1995.
